Background: Here.

Personality: Gabriel Cunningham’s a very sharp man, even when you exclude his medical expertise. He is not only able to ascertain near-undetectable signs pointing towards a patient’s condition, but also notice suspicious people and actions with little effort. This extends to his social life as well. It is not uncommon for Gabe to address the personal problems of his peers in a very effective manner. This could be the reason for his sizeable social circle, which includes a variety of doctors from different hospitals and agencies.

However, despite this ability to understand others, he has little tolerance for people doing his job for him. Even when dealing with a machine, Gabe will constantly insist on doing things himself. He also seems to hold a fair bit of pride in not picking and choosing his patients, even when they’re family.

Gabe doesn’t have a good relationship with authority. He rarely makes reference to his days in the military, except once when complaining, and he develops an enmity with figures of power more often than not. He has absolutely no qualms about using legally gray methods if they will help him save his patients, such as requesting the aid of a convict. However, he’s of the firm belief that, if you’re not interfering with his job, he has no right to interfere with yours.

While constantly snarking to his colleagues and friends, Gabe is a very professional doctor. By his own admission, he says he half-asses his work, and that he’d stay at home all day if he could, but he actually follows procedure correctly, talks to patients politely, and sets their lives as a priority. Even if ordered to stop his diagnosis, he will not consider the job done until he knows what’s wrong with the patient. This professionalism can be reverted into his sarcastic self by exhibiting stubbornness and obstructive behavior, however.

Gabriel has a family, but he’s been estranged from it to unbelievable levels. His wife, while willing to talk to him, has already divorced him. His son doesn’t even know who he is. Gabriel tries to distance himself emotionally from them, acting as if they don’t have anything to do with him, but when pushed, he’ll reveal that he feels an immense guilt for not being able to be there for his son. Gabe cannot easily commit to something emotionally, not because of a fear of the future, but because of regret for the past. He considers himself to be the ‘worst father in the world’. This may also be the reason why he refuses to acknowledge his purpose as being that of saving patients.

It's also worth nothing that he's a heavily dependent smoker, even to the degree of comparing it as vital as oxygen to him.
